Tips on Climbing the Blind Levels in Fixed Limit Poker

If you’re playing Limit poker you understand that climbing the blind levels requires a whole new approach at each level. Failing to prepare for a blind level transition will often lead to going broke or losing most of your bankroll. A little careful prep work will improve your chances and stop you from getting pushed back down time after time.

Before stepping up you should first have the cash to do so. Don’t go play a $10/$20 Holdem game with only a $300 bankroll. You must have at least 200 times the big blind to play a game. Yes, that means $4K to play $10/$20, if you want to have any staying power at that level. You may not need it, but that’s what you should have in case a ridiculously bad run finds you. If you do jump up without enough cash, you must have the discipline to leave if you don’t win early in the session.

It’s a good idea to watch some games before climbing to a new level. Watch to see if the play is different than what you may be used to. The most drastic differences in play are usually at $3/$6 and $30/$60. Know what to expect before you sit down; players will usually be more skilled as the blind levels increase, but not necessarily.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to not play scared. Don’t change your game because you’re worried about losing at the bigger table. Watch your opponents’ habits and try to capitalize on the ones they repeat.
