Omaha Hi Lo,
Hand Selection
March 24 2009
If you just started playing Omaha Hi-Lo you should realize that good starting hands often don’t resemble ones from Texas Hold’em or Omaha. Because you get dealt four cards, and can only use two of them to complete a hand, some hands that appear to be good are not. Knowing the difference will save you lots of bets because you’ll know to fold these weak hands pre-flop.
When you get dealt three of a kind it’s not a good thing. All you have is a pair, and you’re missing one of your outs to a better hand. Unless it’s three aces and your fourth card matches the suit of one of the aces, it’s better to muck three of a kind pre-flop. Chasing one out is never a good practice in any game of poker.
Getting dealt three or four to a flush is another poor starting hand in Omaha Hi-Lo. Once again all you have is two cards to play with, and the other suited cards become outs that you can’t hit, greatly reducing the chances of completing a flush. You should have other possibilities, like low hand opportunities, if you’re going to play the hand.
