Strategies for Scooping the Pot in Omaha Hi-Lo Poker

Omaha Hi Lo, Betting Strategy
May 16 2008

In Omaha Hi-Lo Split there is an event that all players patiently wait for. It’s called scooping the pot, and quite simply it means to win both sides of the split pot at the same time. It’s the object of the game to scoop the pot, and every player needs to have it in their head that this is the ultimate goal. An easy example of scooping the pot would be:

Your Cards
Opponent A
Opponent B
Opponent C
Ac, 3c, Kd, 10d
As, 2h, Qh, Qs
Kc, Jc, 4d, 3d
8h, 8s, Js, 9h

The board cards are:  8c, 5c, Qd, Ks, 2c

Eight of Clubs - 8C Five of Clubs - 5C Queen of Diamonds - QD King of Spades - KS Two of Clubs - 2C

As you can see from this example, everyone in the hand has something for either the high or low hand. But you hold the nut low, because the 2c on the river gives you a better low hand than Opponents A and B. And it also gives you the nut flush, beating the trips of Opponents A and C.

That means you get everything, which will increase your stack size considerably. It’s this possibility that makes this game so appealing for the cash game player. A scooped pot in the later stages of an Omaha Hi-Lo tournament can put you in a dominant position to win. So always keep it in mind when choosing your hands to play. Play hands that have potential to win both, like A-K-2-3 or Q-Q-A-3, and you’ll have success at Omaha Hi-Lo Split. Find more Omaha Hi-Lo Rules in the Bodog Poker Guide!
