Omaha Hi Lo,
Hand Selection
May 14 2008
Omaha Hi-Lo is one of the best variations of poker you can play. It involves many different aspects to consider, but the most important is starting hand selection. In this game you want to consider both high and low possibilities when deciding to play the hand.
The mindset you want to have when choosing hands to play is that you have an opportunity to win both high and low hands. Therefore a hand like:

would be a better choice than:

The first hand gives you the pocket aces and the nut flush possibilities. You also get the nut low possibilities because the ace is both high and low in this game.
Hands you would want to stay away from would be those with three of a kind or three or four to the flush. You can only use two cards from your hand, so three to a flush or three of a kind only reduce your chances of getting a good hand because you have the outs you’ll need to improve, and you can’t use them.
A run of four consecutive cards like:

is a good starting hand because it gives you multiple choices to hit a straight, if the flop comes off that way. Four consecutive cards are best if they’re the lowest or highest four cards, but any run of four is worth seeing a flop.
