Beginner Strategies,
Bankroll
October 28 2008
The super low-end bankroll strategy is a simple concept. Good bankroll management has always dictated that playing from the lower end of your bankroll is the only way to maintain it. That means that you should only play in games where the stakes are a small percentage of your overall bankroll.
Most literature on the subject has advised that at least 100 times the big blind is required, and a better amount would be twice that: 200 times the big blind. That means that if you want to play a $1/$2 game you should have a bankroll of $400.
But the volatile setting of online poker is different from the traditional live poker world. Players have evolved, and those numbers don’t often work online. Super low-end bankroll strategy advises that you play at even lower games. Five hundred times the big blind is the recommended amount to have to ensure that a bad run of cards won’t make you go broke.
That includes lowering the buy-in for tournaments and Sit and Go events as well. Instead of limiting buy-ins to 15% of your bankroll, you should only play in ones that are 5-10% of it. Staying in the game without it costing you money as you learn is the goal. Super low-end bankroll strategy will do that for you, if you have the patience.
