Playing the Right Game in Land-Based Poker

Walking into a casino doesn’t afford you the choice of games that you’ll find online. There are often waiting lists for games, and most casinos will only have a few different games to choose from. Most live games are at higher stakes than you may be used to playing online because the casino makes more money off the big games. They don’t like to run too many smaller stakes tables, and the ones that they do run fill up fast.

The problem with this is that most of us aren’t very patient when we’re waiting to get into a game. We’re able to be patient when we play, but the itch to get into a game often clouds our judgment for table selection. Instead of waiting for the game we should be playing, we often sign up for any game that has a seat opening up soon, or we take an open seat in a game we have no business sitting in.

If you have to wait for the proper game, you should. There’s no sense sitting in a $20/$40 Limit game if you only have $100 to play with. Your buy-in won’t last long in this game, and you might as well go try your luck on the Blackjack tables. Wait for the proper game for you, and don’t settle for what’s open. If you’re not meant to play that night so be it; it’s better than dumping money in a game you can’t afford, or don’t know how to play well.
