Omaha Poker Tips: On the River

Omaha
December 15 2008

If you’ve made it to the river in a hand of Omaha you’ve either had the nut hand, just hit the nut hand or just missed a draw to the nut hand. There’s not much to think about after the river in Omaha. You either have a big hand or you don’t. You just need to ask yourself if the river card gave someone else a bigger hand than yours.

If you hit a flush on the river, and a flush would be the best hand, you need to figure out if someone else has a bigger one than you do. Unlike Holdem, multiple flushes are common in Omaha because everyone has so many cards. If you don’t have the nut flush you should check the river, and not run the risk of getting check-raised. Just take what’s in the pot if your lower flush is good; don’t risk more chips by value betting.

Bluffing in Omaha is uncommon. You can represent a flush or straight (if that would be the nut hand) if you’re head-to-head against someone who was betting on the previous streets, and is likely to have trips or two pair. It will look like you drew out on them, and you may be able to get them off the pot. This situation is rare, and you should be against a tight player to attempt it.
