How to Trap an Opponent in a Cash Poker Game

Cash Games
April 30 2008

There are two types of successful cash game players: the type of player who forces the action and steals lots of pots, and the trapping style player who preys off of these players. Usually the trapper plays a reserved style, and lets the aggressive players bet into them when they have a good hand. They would normally be considered tight style players, but any style is capable of trapping an opponent.

Trapping is essentially the same thing as slow-playing. You must consider the player you’re in the hand with, because tight players are not easily trapped. If anything is different it’s that the trapper knows that his opponent will bet if they check. Traps can be elaborate, where the trapper will bet out a small amount that they expect to get called, only to back off on the turn or river to entice their opponent to make a bet.

Making a larger-than-usual raise pre-flop with a big hand like pocket aces can also elicit the response you’re looking for. If you can make a bet look like a bluff or steal attempt, hands like big-kicker-aces and medium pairs will respond after a move like that.

Any way you can use the betting to disguise your big hand is a trap. Ideally you want to disguise your hand enough to give your opponent sufficient confidence that they have the best hand. Play free or cash poker games in the Bodog Poker Room!
