Fixed Limit Poker Tips: Limping In

Texas Holdem, Fixed Limit Poker
February 19 2009

Limping into hands in Limit Holdem isn’t something that you want to do very often. It’s far more advantageous to raise your way into a pot than it is to limp. If you’re limping you’re likely holding a mediocre hand and are hoping to get lucky by hitting a big flop. But often you end up only partially hitting the flop. Instead of having a good hand to play you’re often in a situation where you have top pair/weak kicker or second pair.

If your hand isn’t good enough to raise with you probably shouldn’t be playing it anyway. Limping in from an early position will often result in another player in a later position raising it to two bets, forcing you to forfeit the bet you called, putting you in a position where you called two bets with a weak hand.

Raising your way into a flop helps to thin out the number of opponents in the hand, and it forces your opponents to play bigger hands and muck their junk. That way you have a better idea what they are likely holding, depending on the opponent, of course. The hands that you raise with can get lower in value as your position in the hand gets better.
