You don't have to get into too many limit
hold'em games before you come across a calling machine. You know this type of player, they are obviously inexperienced at the game and they only
call bets, rarely ever raising the action back. They play most hands and steadily dump their chips away. This kind of player is one of the easiest players to beat if you know how, but they can also be a frustrating opponent when they hit lucky cards.
The rules are simple when you're in a hand against a calling machine. Never, ever, bluff the calling machine. If you know all they do is call, to bluff them would be idiotic of you. You have to have something in your hand to bet into them, and often a small piece of the board will be enough to take down the pot. If you're unsure where you stand in a particular hand, you can always check the action to the calling machine. They're not likely to bluff at you and will also check if they have nothing. If they bet into you, you can be sure that they have something.
You'll suffer the odd beat from this player when they suck out a miracle card on the
river. Don't let the bad luck throw you off. Realize that they will eventually dump their chips to you if you continue to bet into them with a lead.
