When playing in live games you have the advantage of being able to see your opponents. Online you must watch the play of your opponents before you can make any judgments about them. In a live game you can often figure out a lot of things about players just by looking at them. This sort of thing can create small edges for you that can add up to profit over the run of a session. If you’re sitting next to a player who shows that he’s not interested in his hand after he looks at his cards, you’ll know when to raise it up and take his blinds.
Many players like to talk a lot when they play poker. This type of player will often give away information to you without even knowing it. You can watch this type of player and try to notice how they act and what they say when they’re bluffing. They will usually repeat the same type of behavior when they’re trying to bluff you. These players tend to play more aggressively than most, and will play with no fear of losing chips.
You can also tell when players are steaming a lot easier in a land-based game than you can online. Players’ faces will turn red and they’ll shake their heads, or throw their hands in the air. Tilting players are like free money if you can get into a hand with them. They’re a lot harder to pin down online than they are in person.
And keep your mind on how you’re presenting yourself. You’re as exposed as anyone else out there, so be careful what you show them and how often you repeat the same moves.
