Value bets refer to
betting your hand for the value that you think it has. Most value bets consist of putting your opponent on a hand, and betting the maximum that you think that player will call with their hand. Making proper value bets in these situations can be the difference between a winning or losing session.
The
value bet can be any size, it depends on the situation. If you have top pair-good kicker and an opponent's been calling down your bets, usually a bet around three quarters of the pot is a good value bet. But if you have four of a kind, and it's obvious that an opponent has the big full house, an all-in bet would be the best value bet you could make. Your opponent would call any bet because they won't give you credit for quads.
It takes an ability to read betting patterns as well as the practice of grouping hands and eliminating possibilities. Once you learn how to put opponents on hands, you can develop how big your bets should be, based on the individual opponent.
