What if the Last Supper Ended with a Game of Poker?

Ever since the first time I looked at the Leonardo da Vinci painting The Last Supper I can't help but think that they're playing a game of poker. If it was my last meal with my fiends I think I would have had a poker game after the food was finished. It certainly looks like they're playing poker when you take the time to look at the painting. All the characters look to be reacting to a big hand that just played out, with Jesus being the obvious winner.



Looking at the painting Jesus has a look on his face that he's made the ultimate hero call on a bluff made by Thomas, who can't believe that Jesus made the call with his mediocre hand. James the Greater is stunned at the call and holds his arms in the air in disbelief, as if to say “That's too good for me.”, while Philip clearly needs someone to explain to him how Jesus could have made that hero call with only third-best pair in his hand. Also surprised are Bartholomew, James, and Andrew who look on in amazement of the poker skills the Son of God has been displaying in this game.

Matthew, Jude, and Simon are discussing the hand and are getting up as if they've seen enough, and are getting their money out of that game before they dump all their cash to Jesus. Matthew and Jude look to Simon as if they're asking “Can you believe this guy?” He's is just too good for them and they realize that no one is going to beat him on this day.

Judas, Peter, and John are set back from the action as if they're waiting to sit in on the game. They're discussing player types and trying to collude against Jesus and his perfect reads. They look like they've been watching him play for a long time and now they're ready to try their luck against him.

I guess it would be tough to play against Jesus in a game of poker. He would be an awesome player to bankroll though, but he'd likely make you donate all the profit to the needy. And once word got around that Jesus was able to pick off any bluff attempted on him, he would likely have a tough time finding any action. Who's going to play in a game where it's impossible to get an edge, no matter how good of a player you might be?

But I guess that's what it would have been like hanging out with Jesus. He would always hold a big edge over you in every situation, and you'd never get the best of him or take a few bucks off him betting on a game.
