The 2009 Aussie Millions Tournament Schedule

by Bodog Poker | Dec 19 2008

The 2009 Aussie Millions tournament schedule was recently announced. The eleventh instalment of this annual event will get underway with satellites and pre-championship events from Jan. 4 – Jan. 8. Jan.9 marks the official start of the massive tournament’s championship events, which run until Jan. 26.

The Aussie Millions is held each year at the Crown Casino in Melbourne Australia and boasts the sixth largest poker tournament prize pool in the world. It has grown every year since its inception in 1998. International players traditionally head down under as much for Australian summer weather and the Australian Open Tennis Championship as they do for the poker tournament.

Feature Events

The headline act at the 2009 Aussie Millions will of course be the $10,500 Main Event with its $2 million guaranteed first place prize. It is an eight-handed event and is played out over five days. When the field is reduced to 36 players tables are redrawn and trimmed to six-handed play.

Last year saw Russia’s Alexander Kostritsyn take the first place prize at the ripe old age of 21. He beat out a record field of 780 players to take home the $2 million. In 2007 the Great Dane, Gus Hansen, secured his place in history by taking down first place when he beat the field of 747 entrants.

Poker pros and highly-skilled amateurs will get to show their stuff in a two-day HORSE event. The $10,200 buy-in event starts on Jan. 24. It will be played as a standard multi-table freezeout and of course will involve the games of Holdem, Omaha Hi-Lo, Razz, Seven Card Stud and Seven Card Hi Lo. Games will rotate every eight hands.

Jan. 16 sees the start of the two-day bounty event in which a portion of the field will be marked for death with $1,000 bounties on their heads. The tournament begins as 10-handed multi-table freezeout with one bounty player seated at each table.

For the ultimate in high stakes tournament poker, there is the $100,000 No Limit Holdem Challenge. The $100,000 buy-in makes it the most expensive buy-in in the world. It was introduced in 2006 and generated a field of 10 players. In 2007 it grew to 18 and 2008 saw 25 bold players pony up the $100,000.

This unusual tournament sees players start with 100,000 in chips. Betting is Pot Limit before the flop and No Limit after the flop. Players are only allowed 30 seconds to act on their hand but are each given three “Time Breaker” buttons which can be spent to buy an extra 30 seconds.
