WSOP 'November Nine' Profile: Darvin Moon
by Bodog Poker | Aug 18 2009
If there's an amateur that's going to captivate the audience at this year's
WSOP Main Event final table it's going to be current chip leader Darvin Moon. The 45-year-old logging company owner from Oakland, Maryland will try to become the next big name by winning the most coveted title in
poker. He takes a dominant chip lead into the final table, but he'll be in a real shark tank against some very talented professional players.
The blue collar amateur player got to the World Series after he won a $130 buy-in at a Wheeling, West Virginia casino. The win gave him the option to collect the $10K or use it to play in the Main Event. After some coaxing from friends he decided to take the chance and try the Main Event instead of investing the cash back into his company. It was a good thing that he made that choice because he is already guaranteed over a million dollars. He could win as much $8.5 million, and all the glory that would come with becoming the 2009 champion.
The WSOP Main Event is Moon's first big
poker tournament cash, and he couldn't have picked a better time to have a good run of cards. His run has been amazing, as he's picked up premium hands one after the other. The hands have given him the big chip lead, and if it continues in November it's unlikely that anyone will be able to battle his chip stack.
"With the cards I'm getting, it's easy" said Moon. "The first hand I sat down I had pocket kings and rivered trips. Three hands later I had pocket aces and flopped trips. How hard is it? I told them as soon as I go card dead you guys will eat me alive. I'm humble. I know where I stand among the class of people I'm against. I'm outclassed by so far."
Regardless how he finishes Moon intends on returning to work days after it's all over. He intends on improving the lifestyle of his parents, and will wait to get away to Alaska after things settle down a bit. However he finishes it won't change his life very much, but he does intend on going very deep into the final table.
"Ninth place? I got my goals set. It's not first. But it's not ninth, either. I'll be happy. I don't care if I go out on the first hand. I've had fun. It's been worth every minute of it. I just like to play, and it's unreal. It's something I can't even dream of doing, and here I am."
We don't know a lot about Darvin Moon. He's an amateur with no track record to look at, and due to his run of good cards it's tough to nail down a playing style for him. What we do know is that he has nothing to lose in his mind, which makes him very dangerous to be in a hand with, especially since he has most of the chips on the table.
