Gus Hansen Theo Jorgensen Fight

by Bodog Poker | Feb 13 2009

To promote his new website gushansentv.com, Gus Hansen has set up a fight with fellow professional poker player Theo Jorgensen. No one is exactly sure why the Great Dane has decided to use this tactic to draw attention to his new site, but it has managed to spark the interest of at least the media. He made this statement on Gus TV about his new site;

“Having my own free TV channel is a fantastic opportunity for me to connect with my fans and supporters. Today’s technology means everyone can sit down with me and watch as I play live at tournaments or even just in my hotel room with friends”

The fight is scheduled to be on the final day of the European Poker Tour’s stop in Copenhagen at the KB Hallen Concert Hall and Sports Centre on Feb 21, and an undercard is still in the works. Other attractions could include a couple of musical acts and additional fights that would include Peter Davidsen vs. Johnny Jensen and Dane Peter ‘Zupp’ Jepsen and the Finnish poker pro Ilari ‘Ziigmund’ Sahamies. The fights will be available to watch on Hansen’s new website, and live tickets will cost $43. Hansen is hoping for 3000 people to show up, but I doubt he has that many friends and family members.

It’s no surprise that some casinos are offering action on the fight. Hansen started out as the original favorite, but recent information has been leaked that Jorgensen is training with well-known boxing instructor Poul Duville. That pushed the odds in Jorgensen’s favor, and he’s now the favorite at -230 with Hansen at +155, despite the fact that Hansen is fitter than Jorgensen. You can also get action that the fight ends in a draw at +1000, but that wouldn’t make for an entertaining match.

The two have a little more on the line than bragging rights. If Hansen wins he gets $25,000, and if Jorgensen pulls off the victory he’ll get $35,000 from Hansen. Hansen commented in a press release on his opinion of how the fight will go down.

“Beating up Theo in boxing will be much more enjoyable than winning over him in poker. The sweet taste of victory cannot even be made up in terms of money.”

Jorgensen thinks that Hansen’s lack of boxing ability will be his key to victory, and didn’t seem to care much about the prize money on the line.

“Gus was such a pathetic boxer that I was pretty sure I could beat him. Forget about the money, this is all about the glory. The loser of this fight will definitely hear about it for many years to come.”

As much as we’d all like to see two poker pros throw the gloves at each other, a trip to Copenhagen can be a bit pricey. One way to get there is to qualify for the EPT event through Bodog’s Poker Flight Club promotion. You’ll still have to cough up the $43 to see the fight, but you’ll get there for free and you’ll have a chance to win an EPT event and change your life forever.
