If you've been living under a rock for the last year you may not have heard of Twitter. It's another social website that allows you to follow the updates of certain people you may be interested in. These people can be friends or relatives, famous people or artists. As long as they Twitter, you can follow their lives online or on your phone. There's a big poker community that Twitter, including Bodog's Professional Players David Williams, and Evelyn Ng. Even Justin Bonomo has recently opened a Twitter account, and is sending updates during the WPT 25K event this week.
There are many of your favorite players to follow. Daniel Negreanu, Jennifer Harman, Phil Hellmuth, Maria Ho, Kristy Gazes, Howard Lederer, Annette Obrestad, Barry Greenstein, and Vanessa Rousso, just to name a few, have been Twittering for a while. Most of them update how they're doing during a tournament or offer a quick look into the fast-paced life of a poker professional.
Twitter has become one of the biggest social sites now, with only Facebook and MySpace having more users. Twitter is growing at a much bigger rate than the other sites, more than 1000% compared to 250% for Facebook, and even less for MySpace. Its growth has been so fast the application hasn't been able to cope with all the new users, and it has been shut down for servicing many times in the past. After securing more funding, the Twitter servers have been able to handle the growth better, and the site is rarely down now.
David Williams goes by the username of "dwpoker". He updates regularly and keeps followers abreast of his tournament action. David adds pictures and discussion topics for everyone to comment on. He has over 1500 followers and there's a list of over 1100 posts to read.
David often Twitters with another Bodog Pro, Evelyn Ng. She goes by the username "evybabee" and has over 470 followers of her own. She's currently giving updates from Italy where she's playing in the first WPT event to be held in Europe. She's not faring well at the tables but she likes the local shopping.
Justin Bonomo goes by the username "JustinBonomo". He just opened his account on Twitter this week and is logging updates on his play in the $25K WPT championships. He only has 45 followers, but that number will grow once the word is out that he Twitters.
Twitter updates can also be used to give someone an edge at a poker table. I read some posts today from a player in a tournament who had said that a certain player was not at his best because he had been up all night before the event. Anyone playing at a table with that player would know that they're not at their best, and that anyone playing against them could look to take advantage of the information.
The application does what all the social sites do. They connect you to individuals that you have an interest in. Twitter gives poker fans a way to follow the life of a player who has already made it to the big time. And it offers an unedited look, instead of a phoney image constructed by an agent.
