2009 WSOP Events #18-#24 Wrap-Up Reports

2009 World Series of PokerThe $10K Omaha HL/8 or Better Championship Event #18 wrapped up last week when Daniel Alaei won his second WSOP bracelet and over $445K. He outlasted 179 other players, including a final table that featured Annie Duke and Daniel Negreanu. But the big names weren't able to add to their bracelet collections. Scott Clements missed out on winning his third WSOP bracelet by finishing second for nearly $276K.

The $2500 No Limit Holdem Six Handed Event #19 once again had a big field of players. 1,068 of them compiled a prize pool of over $2,456,400, and the lion's share was won by John Brock Parker of Silver Springs, MD. It was his second WSOP bracelet, worth $552,745. Joseph Serock had his second cash of the 2009 WSOP with a second-place finish worth $341,783.

The Pot Limit Holdem Event #20 attracted another big field of 633 players for a prize pool worth over $864K. John Paul Kelly of Aylesbury, England followed up a '08 WSOP final table with his first WSOP bracelet in this event. He won $194,434 for first place after beating out Marc Tschirch in the head-to-head battle. Tschirch took home second-place cash of $120,102.

The HORSE events continue to grow in popularity, and the $3K HORSE Event #21 saw 452 players try their luck for a prize pool worth over $1.2 million. Zachary Fellows finished second in a WSOP event last year, but this time he came out on top for a bracelet of his own. He won $311,899 after defeating James Van Alstyne, who won $192,866 for second place. In third place, winning $126,199, was Fanwood, NJ native Timothy Finne.

Yet another small buy-in holdem event and another huge playing field. The $1500 No Limit Holdem Shootout Event #22 attracted an even 1000 players playing for $1.3 million. Jeff Carris was the last man standing after the final table and he walked away with a $313,673 paycheck. In second palace was Jason Summerville who won $194,004 for three days work. Andrew Margolis came in third for a nice $124,158 paycheck.

Another championship event was played over the weekend with the $10K 2-7 Low Ball Championships running from Wednesday to Friday. Nick Schulman added a WSOP bracelet to his impressive poker trophy case, and added $279,742 to his bankroll. At age 21, Schulman became the youngest winner of a World Poker Tour event in history when he won the World Poker Finals championship in Season Four. Ville Wahlbeck had to settle for second place for $172,864, narrowly missing his second bracelet of the 2009 WSOP. He won the World Championship Mixed Event #12 earlier in the month for $492,375 and has a third-place finish in the World Championship Seven-Card Stud Event #6 for another $152,914.

Players can't seem to get enough of the small holdem buy-in events, and the $1500 No Limit holdem Event #24 attracted an amazing 2,506 players. That created a prize pool of over $3.4 million, with a first-place prize of $607,256. That money went to Houston, TX player Pete Vilandos, who won his second WSOP bracelet. He also finished second in the $1K discount Event #4. That's two huge fields to make it through in one year. In second was Andy Seth, who had a nice payday of $372,855.
